What’s the difference between a symphony and a concerto?

When do I clap?

Why is everything in Italian?

Hey, even Yo-Yo Ma asked those questions once upon a time. The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is pleased to offer all its subscribers their very own Symphony 101. It’s designed for those who wish to enhance their symphony-going experience, just by understanding what it’s all about.

Hosted by ESO Music Resource D.T. Baker, Symphony 101 goes back to the basics. In a lively and fun session, get some background as to what all that information on a symphony program actually means. Bach was Baroque, and Berlioz a Romantic – so what? This is your chance to find out. And best of all, every series gets its own, customized Symphony 101!

With musical excerpts from the ESO’s 2010/2011 season, each Symphony 101 will be interactive as well as informative. Feel free to ask the questions you might have been too shy to ask before – and it’s free!

There’s a separate Symphony 101 for nearly every ESO subscriber series, and each will cover the music, and many of the terms and forms you’ll encounter in the programs – and the program notes – of your series. The program is offered to ESO subscribers at no cost, but you do need to register with us by clicking on your date below. Symphony 101 is being offered on the following dates:

Wednesday, August 25 at 7:30 pm (Midweek Classics)

Friday, August 27 at 8 pm (Pops)
Saturday, August 28 at 8 pm (Saturday Masters)
Sunday, September 12 at 2 pm (Sunday Showcase)
Thursday, September 23 at 8 pm (Lighter Classics)
Friday, September 24 at 7:30 pm (Friday Masters)
