  • Late Night Percussion
  • Late Night takes on a percussive edge with excerpts from exciting 20th century works performed by renowned percussionist Colin Currie. Calgary composer Allan Gordon Bell’s bristling Symphonies of Hidden Fire has ignited audiences since its premiere. It is matched by the lyrical, yet urgently rhythmic Rough Music – a percussion concerto by the impressive H.K. Gruber. The program also includes music by Steve Reich, Per Nørgărd, and Matthias Schmitt.

  • Concerto for Percussion
  • Encore Series
Sensational Scottish percussionist Colin Currie joins Bill Eddins for a magical night on the Masters. Of H.K. Gruber’s percussion concerto, Gramophone magazine wrote: “it is surprising Rough Music has not achieved greater prominence, as it has few equals for subtlety and resourcefulness.” Stravinsky’s ballet based on the music of Tchaikovsky is both delicate and wistful. And if it is possible that Beethoven also had an underestimated work, it is likely his surprisingly deep and rich Fourth Symphony.

  • Violin and Viola
  • The ESO celebrates the eve of Mozart’s 255th birthday! There are few works for any combination of solo instruments as well-known or loved as Mozart’s lush Sinfonia concertante. It is brought to life by Edmonton’s own Andrew Wan (Concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony) and Assistant Principal Viola Charles Pilon. Colourful and dramatic operatic overtures complete the concert.

  • Grieg’s Piano Concerto
  • A winner of several major piano competitions, and laureate of Canada’s Honens Competition, Swiss pianist Gilles Vonsattel makes his ESO debut with Edvard Grieg’s evergreen Piano Concerto. Principal Tuba Scott Whetham plays a lighthearted heavyweight – Vaughan Williams’ surprisingly agile Tuba Concerto. Known more for his film scores, Nino Rota wrote a charming ballet in the baroque style commemorating the 300th anniversary of Molière’s birth. Equally light, Dohnányi’s Symphonic Minutes has touches of French, German, and Hungarian flavours.
