  • Angela Cheng plays Mozart
  • Edmonton’s own Angela Cheng, a favourite with the ESO audiences since she was a teenager, returns to play Mozart’s final solo piano concerto with her good friend Bill Eddins on the podium. Two works combining the old and new are also featured. Vincenzo Tommasini fashioned several of Domenico Scarlatti’s harpsichord sonatas into a ballet, much as Stravinsky did in homage to Renaissance master Pergolesi in his famous ballet Pulcinella.

  • Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto
  • Calgary pianist Jan Lisiecki has amassed an impressive collection of accolades at only 15 years of age. He makes his ESO debut with a tempestuous work by the young Beethoven. Interim Concertmaster Eric Buchmann performs the fiery and melodic Violin Concerto by Dmitri Kabalevsky – a perfect compliment to Stravinsky’s delightful ballet homage to the music of Pergolesi.

  • Late Night 1900s
  • The 20th century was a time of exciting innovation, and you will hear music performed to illustrate the mood of this era. Composed at the height of World War II, Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony glorifies the power of the human spirit with a sound that is bright and heroic. Stravinsky’s suite from the ballet Pulcinella led him into the “neo-classical” style which dominated his compositions for decades. Swiss-born Arthur Honegger was one of the darlings of the avant-garde with his work, Pacific 231, a work inspired by the power and mechanical marvel of a train engine.

  • Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony
  • Encore Series
One of the finest cellists of his generation, Pieter Wispelwey plays Lutoslawski’s Cello Concerto, a remarkable work which grants the soloist “self determination,” according to its composer. Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, written in the final year of World War II, is modeled on classical lines, borrowing some of its melodies from his ballet Cinderella. Arthur Honegger’s Pacific 231 caused a sensation at its 1924 premiere – a work inspired by the power, raw energy, and mechanical marvel of a train engine.
