Tommy Banks, conductor & piano

tommy banksTommy Banks’ place in the legacy of the Edmonton musical community is almost impossible to overstate. One of Canada's greatest jazz musicians, orchestral arrangers, arts advocates – and an Edmonton visionary – Mr. Banks famously declared back in 1980 that Edmonton was just, "too big and too good a city not to have a concert hall." Mr. Banks began looking into the possibility of raising funds for what he felt Edmonton deserved. At around the same time, another ad hoc committee was struck to study the feasibility of both building and sustaining a concert hall. In August, 1983, Tommy Banks' group and this new committee joined forces, and formalized themselves under the Edmonton Concert Hall Foundation name, with David Norwood as its president. Through their efforts, the dream of what became the Francis Winspear Centre for Music was realized.

As well as representing Alberta in the national Senate since 2000, The Honourable Tommy Banks has had an illustrious career as an acclaimed performer, arranger and conductor of jazz ensembles and symphonic pops shows for decades. Many Edmontonians will remember Tommy Banks as the leader of the ESO in the now-legendary TV shows taped for ITV (now Global) that featured Dionne Warwick, Jack Jones, Conway Twitty, Ray Charles and many others. He has led the ESO in countless performances, and has been an advocate of Edmonton music, musicians, and community spirit.

Mr. Banks last appeared with the ESO in January 2012, to help celebrate the expansion of the Edmonton International Airport.

The Canadian pop group was founded by Bruce Innes in Calgary, Alberta in 1966. Originally named The North Country Singers, the group began its career singing in coffee houses and pizza restaurants across Canada. In 1968, they moved to Los Angeles and changed the group name to The Original Caste. They recorded two singles for Dot Records and had limited success, but then signed with TA Records in 1969, a label distributed by Bell Records. At TA Records they met Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, who produced their first two hit singles, One Tin Soldier and Mr. Monday, and their first album, One Tin Soldier. The success of these two songs (Certified Gold in Canada and Japan) enabled the group to tour extensively in The United States, Canada, and Japan. In 1971 Bell Records released Live in Japan Vol. 1, Live in Japan Vol. 2, and The Original Caste, Greatest Hits. In 1974, Back Home was released on Century II/ Capital records. The band toured off and on until 1980, when Bruce Innes moved back to the United States.

Bruce Innes is the founding member of The Original Caste and the visionary for the group’s sound. He has a musical history of gold records and several top ten hits as a songwriter. Julian Kerr is a veteran member of The Original Caste and the go-to-virtuoso. He is equally adept at guitar, keyboard, bass and vocals. Julian’s reputation as Alberta’s musical wizard is re-enforced at every Original Caste concert. As lead female vocalist for The Original Caste, Shelley Jones’ passion for music is clearly evident in every song. Her sound is soulful, passionate, and intense. From pop bands and jazz trios to big bands and symphony orchestras, Shelley is a highly experienced stage performer with a unique, inventive, original delivery and four solo albums to her credit. Bruce Mohacsy has across the board talent. He has impressive skill on multiple instruments and expertise in almost all musical styles, and contributes immensely to The Original Caste’s versatility and rich depth of sound. Lori Mohacsy is a harmony singer extraordinaire - the whiz kid of background vocals. She adds the final shine to The Original Caste’s extraordinarily full, complex sound. Her vocal talent has enhanced many Alberta recording studio projects and she has been involved with theatre, jazz and pop music on a world-wide stage.

This is the group’s debut with the ESO.
