2010-11 Pro Coro Canada

Pro Coro Canada performs, promotes and nurtures choral art, enriching the lives of all who experience its voice.

Founded in 1980 by Canadian Michel Marc Gervais, the twenty-four voices have been shaped by some of the finest choral conductors in the world, including current Artistic Director, Richard Sparks.

Pro Coro Canada is a resident ensemble at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music, and concerts are also held at the intimate and acoustically brilliant McDougall United Church.

  • Pro Coro: Spectacular A Cappella
  • Pro Coro opens its 30th season with spectacular music for chamber choir, including Brahms' Zigeunerlieder, the first movement of Alfred Schnittke's Concerto for Choir and Frank Martin's Mass for Double Choir. The Schnittke is a stunning work, with influences from Rachmaninoff's beautiful Vespers. The Martin Mass written in 1922 is recognized today as on e of the great choral monuments of the 20th century.

  • Pro Coro: Voices United!
  • Everyone has loved Trent Worthington's series of concerts for male voices. This year builds on the tradition, and adds some new elements. The men of Pro Coro Canada, accompanied by Jeremy Spurgeon, will sing a seldom heard song cycle by Gustav Holtz. The women of Pro Coro Canada will be featured in a series of songs by Patricia van Ness and Canadian composer Imant Raminsh. The third set will see the voices unite and joined by internationally acclaimed jazz saxophonist P.J. Perry along with bass player Mike lent and percussionist Luis Tovar. They will be performing unique set of songs fusing the traditional chamber choir with a modern jazz trio. A concert not to be missed!!

  • A Pro Coro Christmas
  • Christmas may never be the same - but in a good way! This year Pro Coro Canada teams up with the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Kent Sangster to perform Nils Lindberg's "A Christmas Cantata". This unique combination of chamber choir and big band provides a whole new soundscape for our audience at the Winspear. Special guests this year are the Edmonton Children's Choir and the Edmonton Youth Choir under the direction of John Weibe. Come and enjoy some of your favorite carols, learn some new ones and hear the sounds of Christmas a whole new way.

  • Pro Coro: Music from Space
  • Spectacular photos from the Hubble telescope accompany music inspired by the wonders of the universe. Urmas Sisask's Gloria Patri, 24 settings of latin texts inspired by his nightly views into the heavens and Ligeti's Lux Aeterna, written for 16 voices which came to fame when Stanley Kubrick used it in his move, 2001 - A Space Odyssey. A concert not to be missed!

  • Pro Coro: Good Friday at the Winspear
  • One of J.S. Bach's great masterpieces, the Passion according to St. John was part of the Good Friday tradition in Leipzig. This powerfully meditative work is both somber and emotionally stirring. A beautiful addition to your Easter weekend.
