2011-12 Pro Coro Canada

2011-12 Pro Coro Canada

Pro Coro Canada's 31st Year!

Pro Coro Canada is a resident ensemble at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music, and concerts are also held at the intimate and acoustically brilliant McDougall United Church.

The search for a new Artistic Director has led us over three continents and seven countries. Three finalists will present our first three concerts of the season. The other three concerts feature additional talented conductors who have selected repertoire which will challenge the choir and please the audience.

  • Pro Coro: Dawn to Dusk
  • This San Francisco Bay Area conductor has a reputation for bringing the voice of a choir to the forefront, inspiring exquisite intonations, sensitivity for the text and a sense of style. The chosen repertoire will led the audience through the night and morning, love and adventure leading back to the night and next morning.

  • Pro Coro: Musical Dialogue Through the Ages
  • A skilled and respected conductor who focuses on bringing out the best in a choir by selecting projects that bring new elements of interests and insights to the performers and listeners in ways that are unique and energizing. The idea of dialogue pervades this concert. There is dialogue between two choirs; between soloists and the choir; between east and west; between sacred and secular and among the various eras represented.

  • Pro Coro: Path of Wonder
  • This European raised conductor is a person with profound musicianship and an intense awareness of how music fits into our society. Through this perspective he has developed a unique insight into choral making in other cultures. The work in this program brings to life the awe-inspiring moment of transformation - in the first, the passing of an angelic body into eternity and in the second, the transformation of a human by way of a pilgrimage.

  • A Pro Coro Family Christmas
  • A first time collaboration between Pro Coro Canada and Da Camera allows conductor Dr. John Brough to bring challenging repertoire to the stage at the Winspear Centre. Seasonal Songs presented in a way that reaches the soul, combined with the less familiar, will move and inspire both the performers and the audience.

  • Pro Coro: Heart Meditations
  • Pro Coro is proud to present the World Premiere of Toronto composer David Mott’s “Heart Meditations,” with the composer performing as guest artist on baritone saxophone. In this work, we are invited to create a space where time stands still, where the body becomes weightless. The text forms a soundworld that evolves through small gestures, sometimes unnoticeably, sometimes with larger leaps. Take this opportunity and experience the feeling of being in another universe — endlessness, infinity.

  • Pro Coro: Good Friday at the Winspear
  • The subscription season closes with the "Dean of Canadian Choral Conductors" Dr. Leonard Ratzlaff at the podium. Dr. Ratzlaff has been recognized in many ways, including the Order of Canada, for his contribution to choral music. Repertoire for this annual Good Friday concert will allow the audience to reflect on the true meaning of the Passion Season.
