About this Concert
Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto is one of the most treasured examples of the form, and the ESO is pleased to present much sought-after David Requiro as guest soloist. After joining the ESO as a violinist, Stefan Jungkind became Principal Viola of the orchestra in 1997. He presents Romanian master Georges Enesco’s Concertpiece for Viola. The concert also includes one of the most famous celebrations of the marvels of nature, Beethoven’s “Pastorale” Symphony.

Lucas Waldin, conductor

Lucas Waldin

The 2011/12 season marks the third for Lucas Waldin as Resident Conductor for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. This mentorship position is made possible through the Canada Council for the Arts and Enbridge. Mr. Waldin graduated in 2006 from the Cleveland Institute of Music with a Masters in Conducting. He has performed with L'Orchestre du Festival Beaulieu-Sur-Mer (Monaco), Staatstheater Cottbus (Brandenburg), and Bachakademie Stuttgart. Lucas was assistant conductor of the contemporary orchestra RED (Cleveland), director of the Cleveland Bach Consort, and a Discovery Series Conductor at the Oregon Bach Festival. In 2007, he was invited to conduct the Miami-based New World Symphony Orchestra in masterclasses given by Michael Tilson Thomas. In Lucerne in 2009, he also participated in a masterclass led by Bernard Haitink, with the Lucerne Festival Strings.

A native of Toronto, Lucas Waldin has spent summers studying in Europe, including studies at the International Music Academy in Leipzig, the Bayreuth Youth Orchestra, and the Acanthes New Music Festival in France. On this continent, he has studied under the renowned Bach conductor Helmut Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival, and has attended conducting masterclasses with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra in Toronto. Mr. Waldin received a Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance from the Cleveland Institute, studying with Joshua Smith.

David Requiro, cello

david requiroFirst Prize Winner of the 2008 Naumburg International Violoncello Competition, David Requiro has emerged as one of today’s most promising young cellists. After winning First Prize in both the Washington International and Irving M. Klein International String Competitions, he also captured a top prize at the Gaspar Cassadó International Violoncello Competition in Hachioji, Japan, coupled with the prize for the best performances of works by Cassadó. Mr. Requiro has soloed with the Tokyo Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, and with numerous orchestras across North America. His Carnegie Hall debut recital at Weill Hall was followed by a critically acclaimed San Francisco Performances recital at the Herbst Theatre. Soon after making his Kennedy Center debut, Mr. Requiro also completed the cycle of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Piano and Cello at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. Actively involved in contemporary music, he has collaborated with composers Krzysztof Penderecki and Bright Sheng, and most recently gave the Dutch premiere of Pierre Jalbert's Sonata for cello and piano at the 2010 Amsterdam Cello Biennale.
 
Mr. Requiro is currently Artist in Residence at the University of Puget Sound where he is professor of cello and director of the chamber music program.  He has served as artist faculty at the Giverny Chamber Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Innsbrook Music Festival and Institute, the Maui Classical Music Festival, Olympic Music Festival, and Center Stage Strings. He is also a member of the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players in New York City.

Stefan Jungkind, viola

stefan jungkindStefan Jungkind began his musical training in London, England as a child, and received his advanced musical training in Edmonton and at the Vancouver Academy of Music, University of Cincinnati and the Banff School of Fine Arts. As a professional violinist and violist, he has played in and performed solos with  the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (as Concertmaster) and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, among others.  He has been Principal Violist of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra since 1997 and was a member of the first violin section for 12 years prior to that. As a chamber musician, Mr. Jungkind has performed numerous concerts with many different ensembles in Calgary, Edmonton, and Thunder Bay, and was one of the founders of both Quartetto Capilano and the Sempre la Musica chamber music series.  As a teacher he maintains a lively class of both violinists and violists.
 
Outside of music, Stefan Jungkind pursues  a keen interest in birds, and in pure mathematics when time permits, and also assists his wife Debra Belmonte, a former twenty-year veteran of the ESO first violin section, in her new store Ibon Antiques & Collectibles. Stefan and Debra continue to encourage music in their violin playing son, Alban, and cello playing daughter, Kendra.
 
Mr. Jungkind last appeared as a soloist with the ESO in May 2004.
