Sixteen-year-old Jonah Hansen began learning the cello at age five with Victoria Clarke, studying chamber music and cello ensemble. At age 13, he began to study with Edmonton Symphony Principal Cello Rafael Hoekman. Jonah was the Principal Cello of the Edmonton Intermediate Youth Orchestra in 2016-17, and is currently a member of the Edmonton Senior Youth Orchestra.
This past June, Jonah won third prize at the Canadian Music Competition, 15-year-old Strings division in Calgary. In January 2019, he won first prize in the Northern Alberta Concerto Competition Intermediate category, and subsequently performed a Saint-Saëns concerto with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra. He has participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival for the past seven years, and received numerous scholarships such as the Alexandra M. Munn scholarship in 2018. Jonah has also been a multiple prize winner at Alberta’s Provincial Music Festival.
In the summers of 2018 and 2019, Jonah attended the Valhalla Fine Arts Summer Camp and 2019 Cello Symposium working with John Kadz and Johann Perron. He also attended the Cello and Chamber Music Seminar in 2018 at the University of Alberta working with Rafael Hoekman and Julie Hereish. Jonah will be a competitor in the semi-final and final of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal competition, November 26-30. He also looks forward to preforming Popper’s Hungarian Rhapsody with the Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton in July 2020, with Lidia Kahner conducting. Jonah occasionally performs with his violinist sister Jillie, for special occasions. He also enjoys playing sports, especially volleyball and badminton.
