Founded in 1996, Kokopelli celebrates its twenty-second season this year.
Founded in 2002, Òran began as an alumni offshoot of the Kokopelli Youth Choir, but it has since developed into a group made up of young adults from all over Edmonton and the surrounding area. Each brings a different viewpoint to the group, but all are united in their passion for singing. The choir stresses the same philosophical goals as its younger counterpart, striving to achieve musical excellence and artistic integrity, as well as combining new interpretive techniques with more traditional choral expertise. Above all, the group is dedicated to sharing joy in song with each other, with other choirs, and with audiences around Edmonton and across Canada. Òran participated in the Laval International Choral Festival in Quebec in July 2009 where they took second prize overall and won two categories. Members of Òran travelled to Europe for a tour in July 2012 including stops in France, Germany, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. In May 2014 season Òran was delighted to perform as an invited ensemble in Halifax at Podium 2014, the biannual conference of the Association of Canadian Choral Communities. Plans for the upcoming season include a tour to Newfoundland in July 2018.
Founded in 1996, Kokopelli celebrates its twenty-second season this year. The ensemble’s members range in age from 14 to 24. The choir aims to share music across the boundaries of culture and place, using song as a tool of communication and community. Kokopelli has been a featured ensemble at many events, provincially, nationally, and internationally. These include the Rocky Mountain National Music Festival, Podium (the biannual conference of the Association of Canadian Choral Communities), the regional conference of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the International Society of Music Educators conference, and others. In addition to many North American cities, the choir has toured to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Malaysia, Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland and Zambia.
Kokopelli is often the ambassador for the choir association and as such, has received several awards for their work with youth, music education, and the African Projects Fund. In 2016, they were featured at Choral Canada's biennial conference, Podium, as part of the Voices West festival choir. This season, Kokopelli will travel to Africa for the fourth time.
