Derek Gomez was born and raised in Vancouver. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music where he studied with Vladimir Orloff. He performed with the Thunder Bay Symphony and Windsor Symphony before joining the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 1984.
In addition to performing chamber music and playing for film scores and commercials, Mr. Gomez has been involved in recordings for CBC, the National Film Board and private studios in Edmonton. He and other members of the Debut String Quartet were Canada's first finalists in the Banff International String Quartet Competition.
Other interests include computers and running. He is an award-winning website designer. Derek participates annually in the ESO's Beat Beethoven road race as either a runner or musician and has enjoyed taking part in the Jasper/Banff Relay race.
His instrument is made from carbon fibre. It was designed and produced by cellist Luis Leguia, a 40-year veteran of the Boston Symphony.
