Janice Quinn

Double Bass

Janice Quinn, a native of Edmonton, has been a member of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra since 1995 and the Alberta Baroque Ensemble since 2015. She began her studies at the early age of three on the violin and, at four, attempted the cello. At six, she saw the light and began playing the bass with instruction from her mum, Paddy Brine, who was one of the founders of the Edmonton Public String Enrichment Program.

Janice attended high school at the Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan and spent eight weeks each summer at Interlochen’s National Music Camp. She studied under Tom Knific, Winston Budrow, and Larry Hurst. After Interlochen, Janice studied in New York at the Juilliard School, where she attained both a Bachelor and master’s degree of Music studying under John Schaeffer and Homer Mensch.

While in New York, Janice freelanced with several groups. Her playing opportunities included chamber recitals, touring with a Light Opera Company, and working on and off-Broadway. She taught throughout her college years and continues to teach in Edmonton.

Through music, Janice has been fortunate enough to travel around the United States and Europe, playing under many famous conductors. She has been a member of the ESO for 27 years and is married to clarinetist David Quinn. Together with their two kids, they enjoy skiing and walking their dogs. Janice is also an avid knitter and volunteer in her community.
