The Art of Collaboration

The Art of Collaboration

By Maia Ellis

In a world that often feels divided, we believe collaboration is a powerful act of optimism. It’s a way of saying that when we work together, we can create more and create better. Whether it’s through music, dance, art, or theatre, the arts remind us that harmony, both literal and figurative, depends on listening, responding, and trusting one another.

At its core, this spirit of working together is the heart of the arts. Every concert, exhibition and performance brings people to share in something that is larger than themselves. Today’s audiences want to feel a connection; not only to the music being performed on stage, but to the people and stories behind it. Working with other artists and organizations reminds us just how powerful collaboration can be. It inspires us, helps us to reach new communities, and keeps us fresh, relevant, and connected to the world around us.

In September, the Mazurka Music and Arts Society wowed audiences with a captivating combination of Chopin’s Piano Concertos and stunning visual art by local artists. Then, in October, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra shared the stage with Edmonton Opera, for two breathtaking evenings of opera’s greatest hits, showing how powerful it can be when voices and instruments unite to tell a story. Joining forces like this lets each partner shine, and together we’re able to create something far more powerful than could be made alone.

Looking ahead, we’re excited for our future collaborations. December will bring one of our favourite holiday traditions, Handel’s Messiah, with Chorus Inspira (formerly Richard Eaton Singers) once again lending their incredible voices to this magnificent work. Then, in April, we will once again be joining forces with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra for a truly out-of-this-world performance of Holst’s The Planets

Collaboration is more than just shared projects. It’s about openness, curiosity, and generosity—the qualities that keep the arts alive and growing. These partnerships ensure that we aren’t just performing music, we’re building community. They keep us growing, learning, and creating alongside others who share our belief in the power of the arts to bring people together.
