Camille Saint-Saëns’ philosophy that “form is the essence of art” is wonderfully realized in his compact and eloquent Cello Concerto No. 1, featuring Montreal-born Jean-Guihen Queyras in his long overdue Edmonton debut.

Love Letters to Alberta

Join us for an affectionate salute to composers who call Alberta home. Enjoy a unique variety of orchestral styles by three generations of contemporary creators. You'll experience world premieres by local student Annika Schoenhardt and Cree composer Cris Derksen, alongside music inspired by Arthurian mythology (Estacio), contemporary multitasking (Fung), the Great Lakes (Toews), and sunlight dancing through ice crystals (Bell). Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni conducts this special concert of music by friends and neighbours.
The Forest Reclaims the Land

Last season’s concert featuring Dinuk Wijeratne achieved instant legendary status. He cast a spell over the audience as well as the musicians, conjuring a communal musical experience of rare beauty. Don’t miss his return, conducting music that’s close to his heart, including a dramatic and emotionally wrought concerto written for concertmaster Robert Uchida, and a serene, impressionistic tone poem inspired by the majesty of a forest. Wijeratne describes the musical fabric of his own tone poem as “a multiplicity of voices, lines, and themes that decide – on a whim – when to coalesce and coexist”.

This is your chance to sit “B-Side” a musician from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. You’ll get a unique behind the scenes glimpse of a real orchestra at work while playing music alongside them. Scratch Class

It’s never too late to start learning an instrument! This beginner-friendly program is designed for adults with little to no musical experience who want to live out their dream of playing the violin or cello. Participants will attend a group lesson for 75 mins per week for five weeks and learn to play from scratch! You can expect a foundation of basic technique including good posture, sound production, and learning beginner melodies. An instrument will be provided to each participant for the duration of the program. No experience needed!

Curious about how music works? Our popular musical appreciation series Demystifying Music is made for you. Guided by an experienced music educator, these relaxed, no-pressure evening courses are your chance to learn everything you wanted to know about music but were afraid to ask! When we talk about “classical music” what do we actually mean? This course focuses on the foundational “eras” of orchestral music: Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern. What’s the difference between a Sonata, Symphony, or Concerto? In this course, you’ll define the basics of musical language so you know what to expect from your concert program.
