Lucy Garbett

Performance Coaching

Lucy Garbett is a freelance musician and music educator, Counselling Therapist, Registered Therapeutic Counsellor, Certified Grief Professional and Professional Life Coach. Lucy studied horn performance at the University of Toronto and graduated with their bachelor’s degree with Honours in 2020 and is an alumna of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.

After graduation, Lucy planned to pursue her acceptance at the New England Conservatory of Music, however, did not attend due to COVID-19. Instead, Lucy completed a Professional Counsellor Diploma and Life Coaching Certification at Rhodes Wellness College and has been working as a therapist, coach and wellness consultant through her practice Resonant Energy Therapy ever since.

Lucy currently works as a music educator at the Visionary Centre for the Performing Arts and YONA-Sistema while running her therapy practice. In addition to therapy and teaching, Lucy remains a freelance musician in the community, and a casual musician with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

Teaching Quote/Philosophy:

Most artists begin their journey at a young and formative age. They work with teachers throughout that journey, honing their craft and developing the skills required to perform to the highest degree. That being said, such levels of commitment and excellence tend to precipitate higher levels of stress and strain on an individual’s life. Lucy offers holistic performance coaching that supports up-and-coming artists with their mental and emotional health, networking and time management, and the development of sense of personal and professional self. In sessions, students are offered a diverse range of tools to improve their self-efficacy, while also directly supporting their ability to hone their craft as artists. In your sessions, we will ensure that you are in the driver's seat of your career and are supported from every perspective. Your art is so valuable to your community, and together we will make sure that you are able to create it and continue to engage with the music community safely and healthily throughout your career.

Lesson Description:

Working with clients and students from a well-rounded and holistic model has become Lucy’s calling after navigating their own mental and physical health crises brought about by the intense stress of a performance career. Having studied and trained in modalities such as CBT, DBT, grief therapy, narrative therapy, expressive arts therapy, somatic therapy, grief therapy, IFS and parts work, as well as topics such as feminist theory, neuroscience as it pertains to counselling, the vagus nerve, mental skills, goal setting and change making, self-efficacy and motivational interviewing, it became imperative to Lucy to provide these resources to other artists so that they may make changes to their health and wellbeing and continue to make the art they so deserve to be able to make - without fear, without hurt, and with their whole self intact. Lessons and coaching with Lucy involve a multifaceted, psychosocial approach. The whole musician will be welcomed into the room, and fear will be supported with grace and sensitivity, and successes with joy and celebration.
