Viola & Violin

Clayton Leung is an accomplished musician who has established a strong presence in the vibrant Edmonton arts scene. He has graced the stages of organizations such as the Alberta Baroque Society, Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton, Early Music Alberta, Edmonton Chamber Music Society, Edmonton Recital Society and the Edmonton Opera Association.

Clayton’s musical journey has taken him beyond national borders, as he has performed with various ensembles both nationally and internationally. Notable performances include a European tour with Kent Sangster’s Obsession's Jazz Octet, a live concert on PBS at Rochester International Jazz Festival, a lecture recital at the 50th International Viola Congress in Paris and a guest violist on Lafayette String Quartet’s farewell tour. Additionally, he recently released an album of commissioned works by Canadian composers with Calgary’s Kensington Sinfonia ‘Forces of Nature’.

Clayton’s musical prowess led him to join the esteemed Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 2013, where he has taken on various leadership roles and captivated audiences as a soloist in performances of renowned works such as W. A. Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, Max Bruch’s Romance, and Peteris Vasks' viola concerto.

Clayton is actively involved in the community as a proud member of Concerts in Care Alberta, which brings live music to retirement residences across the Province. He is a dedicated teacher, guest lecturer and adjudicator in the performing arts festivals of Alberta. He is also featured in local magazines: YEG fitness and Modern Luxuria representing health, wellness and music.

Prior to his time in Edmonton, Clayton honed his craft as the principal violist with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and as a member of the Atlantic String Quartet. His musical journey began in Fort Langley BC, where he embarked on violin lessons at the Langley Community Music School. Clayton furthered his studies at the University of Victoria before delving into the world of viola at the University of Minnesota and the Cleveland Institute of Music, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and accomplished musician.

I am devoted to exploring musical possibilities within each student along with developing their knowledge and appreciation of music. I encourage students to take on their musical ambitions with patience, efficiency and optimism. 

 

Lesson Description: 

Clayton offers individual violin and viola lessons online and in-person at the Alberta College Campus. He teaches beginners to adults and all levels of violin and viola from Royal Conservatory of Music grade 1 to ARCT.

Professional Development: International Summer Academy Bad Leonfelden 
 
He is an alumnus of the Castleton Music Festival, Perlman Music Program, Spoleto Festival USA, Toronto Summer Music Festival and has been in residence at Banff and Orford Arts Centres.
