Rhonda Henshaw

Viola & Violin

Rhonda Henshaw has been a member of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra's viola section since 2002. She holds a Bachelor of Music Performance with Distinction from the University of Calgary and an Artist Diploma from the Vancouver Academy of Music. Her studies also took her to the Banff Centre for the Arts, and she is an alumna of the National Academy Orchestra and the Jeunesse Musicales World Youth Orchestra. Her teachers include Christopher Sandvoss, Gerald Stanick, and Karen Tuttle.

In Edmonton, Rhonda has performed with numerous ensembles, including the Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton, the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, the Edmonton Recital Society, the C’mon Festival, and is a founding member of the Onyx String Quartet. She has recorded, performed, and toured with Kent Sangster’s Jazz ensemble, the Obsessions Octet, which included a performance at Carnegie Hall.

Rhonda finds fulfillment through teaching and is especially happy to introduce young violinists to the wonderful sounds of the viola. When not playing her viola, Rhonda spends her free time with her 2 daughters, enjoys walking with her dog through Edmonton’s beautiful river valley, and tries her best to fit in a bit of knitting every day.

Teaching Quote/Philosophy:

Music education builds creativity, discipline, and collaboration. I guide students to master their instrument, while helping them to discover what it is that they want to say with it. Hopefully while having a bit of fun!
