Dan Sutherland
Clarinet & Bass Clarinet
Dan Sutherland, former Head of Winds at Alberta College Conservatory of Music, has taught clarinet to all ages and levels of students since 1986. He began teaching his own children clarinet at a very early age and has developed a particular interest in teaching young students. Dan believes in working on basic technique regularly to enable more complex musical accomplishment. More than eleven major clarinet teachers have influenced Dan’s own development. He brings the richness of his own background to his teaching of others.
Dan has a master’s degree in applied music from the University of Alberta and a bachelor’s degree in performance from the University of Toronto. He frequently supplements the clarinet section of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and freelances as a performer on clarinet, bass clarinet, and Eb soprano clarinet. He has appeared with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Red Deer Symphony, National Ballet Orchestra, Royal Winnipeg Ballet Orchestra, Canadian Chamber Orchestra, and Citadel Theatre orchestras.
In addition to music, Dan has participated in endurance competitions, completing several Ironman competitions and marathons.
