Grades 2-6 | 2026-2027 Applications Now Closed

The 2026/2027 Inquiring Minds Application is now closed. Thank you for your interest. Applicants will be contacted by the Site Coordinator by June 5, 2026.

At Sound School, the Winspear Centre will become your classroom for an entire week. Developed with the Alberta Education curriculum in mind and in partnership with the Inquiring Minds network, Sound School classes build cross-curricular connections through hands-on experiences with music.

Sound School strives to:

  • Engage students with the world of music, through listening, playing, & creating.
  • Learn about all aspects of a performance venue including lighting, acoustics, instruments, philanthropy, and more.
  • Learn about a variety of careers that inspire music lovers to share their passion.
  • Build strong community connections and inspire community development.

You'll work with our Program Coordinator to customize your week to suit your curricular goals, and we'll provide resources to incorporate your Sound School learning throughout the school year.

Offered Activities and Curricular Outcomes:

Please note that these activities align with curricular outcomes from the current and optional-piloted Alberta program of studies.

What is Inquiring Minds?

Inquiring Minds offers an innovative approach to informal learning pioneered by Gillian Kydd and Don Harvie. Intriguing and enriching sites across Edmonton (such as museums, fire halls, civic venues and nature preserves) welcome classes of children to use their site as a classroom for an entire week. Students and teachers use this new ‘classroom’ to engage in learner-led, hands-on, inquiry-based learning and exploration through tours, journaling, and a host of creative activities. This model makes the stuff students learn in textbooks come alive, and has an incredible power to inspire students and teachers!
