Ken Kagawa

Acting Principal Trombone

Ken Kagawa is a varied musician, performing all genres of repertoire, from jazz to modern classical music. A prizewinner of two concerto competitions, he is pushing the boundaries of what is traditionally expected of the trombone.

With the help of his former teachers Nick Platoff and Becky Dugan, he traveled to New York in 2021, where he embarked his Bachelor’s of Music degree at the Manhattan School of Music with Colin Williams. However, he officially completed his undergraduate studies at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music with Gordon Wolfe in 2025. He has also spent summers at the Aspen Music Festival and Lucerne Festival, where he studied with accomplished professors such as Per Brevig, Jim Miller, Weston Sprott, Warren Deck, Zach Bond, Mikael Rudolfsson, Jack Adler-McKean, and Ohtae Kwon.

As a freelance musician, Ken has played with orchestras all over Canada including the Toronto Symphony, Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec, Hamilton Philharmonic, Niagara Symphony, Windsor Symphony, and the Canadian Opera Company orchestra.

In his free time, Ken enjoys biking, hiking, playing chamber music, and recreational team sports.
