Alice Haekyo Lee began playing violin at age five in Victoria, B.C. She won 2nd prize at the International Fritz Kreisler Competition 2018 held in Vienna, in addition to taking 1st prize at the Shean Strings Competition 2017 and the OSM Manulife Competition 2016. She has also won many other music competitions.
At age 11, Alice debuted with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra under Tania Miller as the soloist in the Victoria Symphony Splash 2011. In 2019, Alice played with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under Mario Kosik, while in 2018 she performed with the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester under Johannes Wildner in the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein, and with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, she has performed with the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, the Sooke Philharmonic, the Academy Chamber Orchestra under Claudio Vena in Koerner Hall, Toronto, and the Victoria Conservatory Faculty Orchestra. Alice has also performed Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in several educational community outreach projects at elementary schools for refugee children.
Alice has done two radio recordings with CBC Radio 2’s In Concert program, and CBC has also broadcasted performances she has made at the Banff String Quartet Festival 2017 and the Music Mondays Series 2019. She was named as one of CBC’s 30 hot musicians under 30 in 2017.
She has collaborated with several major artists. Alice recently played alongside Maxim Vengerov in the Mendelssohn Octet for Strings. She has also worked with Cecilia Bartoli, Baiba Skride, and many more.
Alice has attended many summer festivals, such as the Gstaad Menuhin Music Festival 2017-2019, the Rencontres Musicales Internationales 2017-2019 in Switzerland, the Banff String Quartet Festival 2017, the Banff Masterclass program, Morningside Music Bridge, and the Indiana summer academy. Additionally, she has played for major artists including James Ehnes, Midori, Cho Liang Lin, Mihaela Martin, Jonathan Crow, Joel Smirnoff, Donald Weilerstein, Paul Kantor, Ning Feng, Tadeusz Gadzina, and Ivan Zenaty.
Currently, Alice is pursuing her Bachelor’s degree at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with Maxim Vengerov. She previously studied under Maxim Vengerov and Oleg Kaskiv at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland, Barry Shiffman and Victor Danchenko at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, Ann Setzer at the Juilliard Pre College School, Michael van der Sloot at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and Kathryn Ranger.
