Nicholas Yee

Cello

Nicholas is a musician and multidisciplinary artist from Edmonton. He enjoys making music that’s mellow and moody, and recontextualizing the cello and other classical instruments to engage in current cultural conversations. Nicholas likes working closely with other artists and being a part of interesting collective initiatives across many genres. Over the years, he has had opportunities to perform music from anime and video game soundtracks at Animethon and Otafest, worship music at Break Forth and Elevate X conferences, hip hop at the One Love Music Festival in Calgary, musical theatre with the Edmonton Pops Orchestra, and new music at the Canadian Stage and Luminato Festival in Toronto. Nicholas also got to share the stage with Shawn Mendes at the JUNO Awards, where they performed his own arrangement of Mendes’ breakout hit Stitches.

For almost a decade Nicholas has used YouTube as a space for arranging and recording chamber music, building online community, and hosting collaborative projects. Some notable videos include an arrangement of music from Stranger Things with over 6 million views, a version of The Mandalorian theme for 2 cellos that was promoted on the official Star Wars Twitter, and an instrumental cover of Run by Joji. A few of Nicholas’ favourite composers and performers are Ryuichi Sakamoto, Mree, IU, Antônio Carlos Jobim and Joji. He has a love for movies, the mountains, and milk tea.
