Canadian Violinist, Philip Manning, is the recently appointed assistant
concert master of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and is equally at
home as a solo, chamber, or orchestral musician. His playing has been
described as ‘virtuosic’, ‘passionate’ and praised for his ‘attention to
detail’. He has won many awards and scholarships for solo and chamber
performances, delighting audiences in Canada and the United States.
Over his career, Philip has performed as a feature soloist with several
orchestras and in 2016 was successful in his first two ever professional
orchestra auditions. It was at this point that Philip chose to join the
Victoria Symphony’s violin section as the orchestra’s youngest core
member.
Philip completed his undergraduate degree in violin performance at the University of Victoria as a pupil of Professor Ann Elliot-Goldschmid of the Lafayette String Quartet. As the recipient of a full scholarship, Philip also spent time in the USA completing a Graduate Level Artist Diploma in Violin Performance at Duquesne University under the tutelage of Professor Charles Stegeman. Philip won the Duquesne Concerto Competition and was also awarded the honor of being Concertmaster of the Duquesne Symphony Orchestra for the duration of his time there. He was a finalist in the Canada Council of the Arts Instrument Bank Competition in 2015, and since 2017 he has been a returning professional attendee of the annual Sunflower Music Festival in Topeka, Kansas. In 2013, Philip was accepted on full scholarship to the intensive Violin Institute at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.
His additional teachers/master class clinicians include Gerald Stanick (UBC School of Music), Dr. Robert Skelton (U of Western Ontario), Paul Kantor (Rice U in Houston Texas), Blair Milton (Chicago Symphony), Martin Chalifour (Concertmaster LA Phil), Marc Destrube (Axelrod String Quartet, Wash. DC), Pinchas Zukerman, Jonathan Crow (Toronto Symphony) and Terrance Tam (Victoria Symphony).
