A Message From Our President and CEO, Annemarie Petrov

Dear ESO subscribers & donors,

Thank you. We are still in uncharted terrain and you have stayed with us throughout these last few months. I hope that you’ve enjoyed our online posts and the worldwide offerings of music through your favourite channels.

Today, the Premier announced encouraging news about Stage 2 of our province’s relaunch strategy. Audiences will still be limited to small numbers, but our province has managed this crisis well and we know that one day, we will be able to welcome large audiences back into our building – but it's still going to be a while. Our priority is to keep our musicians, staff, and especially you, safe. Today, we announce that we are reimagining our plans for the 2020/2021 season, and that the concerts originally scheduled will not proceed as planned.

For everyone who has already purchased a subscription for the 2020/2021 season, thank you. We will reveal how we are changing the concerts we had planned into new events by September. There will be a variety of virtual and limited live music experiences depending on the health restrictions in place at that time.

On the eve of the Solstice - Friday, June 19 at 7:00 PM MST - select members of the ESO will perform “Summer” from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons on the Winspear stage, led by Concertmaster Robert Uchida. While this performance will not be open to the public, you will be able to experience it online. We are so excited to share this wonderful performance with you as a token of our deepest appreciation.

Please join me and ESO Chief Conductor Alexander Prior for a virtual Town Hall meeting this Thursday, June 11 at 12:00 PM MST.Ask us your questions. Attendance will be limited, so please RSVP here as soon as possible.

We plan to thrive. We plan to come through this better and stronger than ever. I hope you will join us online and stay connected virtually to music, your ESO, and the Winspear Centre until we can be together again.

With gratitude,
Annemarie Petrov, CEO and President

A Message From Bob Bob Bernhardt, Conductor

May 1, 2020

I hope you're keeping well and safe and adjusting to this challenging time in our lives. The approaching gift of beautiful spring weather will be a boost that we all need so much!

If you watched the above video, you know that I’m writing with the disappointing news that the Symphony Under The Sky Festival for 2020, this coming Labour Day, has been cancelled.

It's hard to imagine not gathering in Hawrelak Park together to celebrate the kick-off to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s new season, and our shared love of live symphonic music played so superbly by our beloved ESO in that beautiful space. This has become a wonderful tradition for so many of us, in the audience and on stage. In the best interests of staff and patrons, and in alignment with government advisories for this summer, cancellation of the Festival feels both wise and important, as hugely disappointing as it is.

The ESO wants to assure you that your seats will be held for Symphony Under the Sky 2021. Your seats from 2019 will carry forward, though you will be able to request changes next season as usual.

The Winspear Centre is looking into all available options to see if there's a way to do something equally special to stand in for this year's Symphony Under The Sky. For now, if you've purchased a subscription to Symphony Under The Sky, you have a few options:

  • Donate your tickets back to the ESO.
  • Exchange your tickets into other concerts in the 2020/2021 season.
  • Request a refund.
  • If you have an online account, you can donate your tickets, exchange them into an ESO concert in the 2020/2021 season, or request a refund by clicking the button below.
  • If you have any questions, please contact the Box Office team at

Not that anyone was counting, but this was to be my 15th season as the lucky human to conduct our Symphony Under the Sky Festival. I’ll get to celebrate next time! For Nora and me, we cherish our time in Edmonton, and delight as members of the ESO Family. We so look forward to seeing you again soon.

Please take care and stay safe.

A Message From Our President and CEO, Annemarie Petrov

I hope you're keeping well and adjusting to this challenging time in our lives. I know that each of us is experiencing it in different ways as we isolate in our homes. I’m sure it won’t come as a surprise that I’m writing to confirm that all remaining concerts to the end of June are cancelled at the Winspear Centre.

We’re all learning ways to connect with people while we can’t physically be together. For us at the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, that means our gifted musicians bringing "live" music into your homes. We’ve streamed a few concerts online, which is new and exciting for us. We’ve also been working closely with Concertmaster Robert Uchida on capturing a series of violin Bach performances set in the empty Winspear Centre. Robert saw an opportunity to showcase our beautiful facility while bringing comfort and hope to everyone through his music. I hope these musical offerings bring you a smile.

If you have tickets for an ESO concert between now and June 15, 2020, you can donate, exchange, or have your tickets refunded by clicking the buttons below. We’re pleased to announce that a donor has come forward to ensure the sustainability of our organization and will match 100% of the value of any ESO ticket donated back to the organization through the end of the 2019/2020 season. To take action, please email our Box Office at or use the form below.

You play a vital role in our mission to connect with people through music. Your continued support means so much to us and we need you now more than ever.

One day soon, live music will fill the Winspear again and we can't wait to share that moment with you. For now, we'll continue posting concert streams and videos regularly. You can find all of them on our website here.

Take care and stay safe.
