Sibelius’ mighty Symphony No. 2 suggests an expansive winter landscape, arctic sunshine, icy winds, and majestic mountains; but it also expresses courage, defiance, and resistance. Haydn’s energetic Sinfonia concertante provides the rare opportunity to see four ESO musicians featured as soloists, all in the same piece. Magnard’s powerful hymn for orchestra was the first piece played by the Orchestre national de France after the liberation of Paris in 1944.
