About The Concert

Wynton Marsalis’ dreamlike Trumpet Concerto boldly links old and new world traditions. From the opening flourish imitating nature’s most famous trumpeter, the elephant, through six movements that evoke New Orleans soul, jazz, a Mexican habanera, bebop, a French waltz, blues, Louis Armstrong, and Eastern European folk music, the piece is a dizzying journey.

Ayanna Witter-Johnson’s gentle Blush “explores the ups and downs of young love” in the Caribbean, with rhythms inspired by Mento music – early Jamaican folk that blends African and European traditions.

This concert will not include an intermission.
