Meet the Instructors

Alex Valle

A graduate of the University of Alberta's Bachelor of Music degree, Alex has dedicated herself to the flute for over a decade. Under the instruction of former ESO Assistant Principal Flute, Shelley Younge and of current ESO Principal, Liz Koch, she has developed a deep-rooted love of all things Baroque and Classical. When she is not tucked away in the Winspear instrument vault caring for instruments, she can be found reading up on historical performance practice and being Mozart's #1 fan. Alex teaches flute and recorder at YONA at St. Alphonsus and Kipohtakaw YONA.

Ben Caulfield

Ben Caufield is a drummer from Edmonton, Alberta. Recently completing his bachelor's in jazz and contemporary music from MacEwan University, he seeks to expand his skillset within the music industry both as a player and as a recording engineer. Behind the kit, Ben has experience playing a variety of styles, having had the opportunity to study with many great teachers over the years, including a few months under the legendary Finnish drummer Tommi Rautiainen, during an exchange in Finland through the MacEwan music program. Behind the board, Ben has experience recording and producing everything from intimate singer-songwriters to hard-hitting post-grunge. Ben emphasizes the community and cultural benefits to be gained through studying, playing, and listening to music, and is an advocate for accessible music education. As such, he is proud to have joined the staff at the Youth Orchestra of Northern Alberta, the Winspear Sistema music program, as a site coordinator this year. Apart from playing and recording, Ben also has experience behind the scenes in the music industry, from working as a stagehand for packed stadium shows, to developing his own curriculum as a private instructor, to sitting on the board of directors for the Toneart Ensemble, a local music collective and non-profit. You can find him performing some of his own compositions live with various bands across Edmonton.
