ESO 101: Julianne Scott

Meet Julianne Scott, ESO Principal Clarinet. She’s been playing with the ESO for 11 years now! Julianne started her career by performing with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and has since lived in six other cities. She loves the mountains and Duchess Bake Shop, and she is affectionately known as ‘Noodles.’

When was your earliest recital and what did you play?
My first full solo recital was probably not until university, but sixth grade was the first time I played in the local Solo and Ensemble competition that I took part in every year through high school.

How long have you been with the ESO?
Eleven years.

How many instruments do you know how to play?
Unless you count E-flat clarinet, I am a one-hit wonder.

What is your musical guilty pleasure?
Dave Matthews Band, but I am not sure I feel guilty about that.

What is the last album you purchased (digital or physical)?
Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope

What was the last song/piece of music you listened to?
Right now, a clarinet Sonata by Mieczysław Weinberg that I plan to start working on this week.

What would your DJ name be?
CoconutDQ.

Who would be your partner on the Amazing Race?
Definitely Megan Evans (ESO Assistant Principal Horn) and Kate. They are amazing at these things, and I could sit back and enjoy!

What would your personalized license plate be if you had to have one?
I don’t think I would have one. Clari-Nerd.

What is your pre-concert ritual?
It depends on the concert and how good a reed I need! I usually warm up again at home in the late afternoon. Play through some of the most challenging spots and pick a couple reeds that I like best. Then cook dinner and undoubtably never leave quite enough time to not leave the house in a rush.

What's something people might not know about you?
I have citizenship in three countries.

What is your favourite sports team or player?
Well, in my wedding vows I vowed to always cheer for the Oilers, so we will go with that!

How many different cities have you lived in?
Calgary, Kamloops, Albuquerque, Colorado Springs, Toronto, Los Angeles, and Edmonton.

What is your favourite city (or a country) you’ve travelled and why?
So many! This is hard to choose, so I will pick two. Maui because the beaches are amazing, the weather is great, there’s lots of delicious fresh food, and I get to spend quality time with my husband. And Colorado because it is where I grew up so I get to visit my family. I love Denver and the mountains.

Do you have a nickname?
Noodles.

What is your favourite orchestra other than the ESO?
Colorado Springs Philharmonic. I grew up listening to them and playing with them was my first job.

What do you do in your free time?
I have been learning how to make different kinds of lotions.

What food would be on your rider as a rock star?
Duchess Bake Shop’s Gruyère and almond croissants.
