It is my pleasure to welcome you to the ESO’s 2024/25 Season!

Allene HacklemanAllene Hackleman, ESO Principal Horn

This year, I’m celebrating my 20th season as a member of your ESO and I’m prouder than ever to be a member of this great orchestra. I’m fortunate to share the Winspear stage with so many incredible musicians who call Edmonton home, as well as guest artists of the highest calibre from around the world.

I am delighted to share some of the highlights of our musical offerings that we've curated with you in mind.

One of my personal favourite pieces is Sibelius’ fifth symphony, which we will perform in January. This gorgeously haunting and majestic work by the Finnish composer is the perfect music to listen to in the dark days of an Edmonton winter – like winter in the north, it shines with a stark and touching beauty.

More highlights of the Classics series include Ravel’s Bolero and sparkling Piano Concerto in G, as well as Brahms’ lush and exquisitely crafted second symphony. The orchestra will really get a chance to show off in Bartók’s virtuosic masterpiece, Concerto for Orchestra, led by Grammy Award-winning conductor Karen Kamensek, making her Edmonton debut.

One of the greatest pianists of our time, Canadian star Marc-André Hamelin, will be performing all five of Beethoven’s piano concertos, led by esteemed Canadian conductor Bernard Labadie. This is a rare opportunity to hear all of these concertos together (over two back-to-back performances), and promises to be a very special event you will not want to miss!

As always, we’re showcasing top-notch entertainers on the Robbins Pops series, including jazz singer and pianist Tony DeSare performing the music of Cole Porter, and Broadway star Capathia Jenkins singing the greatest hits of soul. And, the ESO goes back in time to the 1980s in June with energetic conductor Stuart Chafetz.

We’ve got a great Symphony for Kids lineup for families. We’re looking forward to welcoming back the wildly inventive entertainer Al Simmons in a show that will definitely be loads of fun, as well as our friends at Platypus Theatre.

We are excited to share our love of great music with you, and hope you will find moments of delight, connection, and inspiration at our concerts. See you at the Winspear!
