Meet Kathryn Macintosh, assistant principal trombone in the ESO. She's performed with the ESO since the 1980s. Kathryn was born in Montreal but grew up in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. She attended Acadia University and the University of Toronto, where she majored in Trombone Performance under Gordon Sweeney.

When was your earliest recital and what did you play?
I was 18 and I performed Marcello Sonata in F, Berghmann La femme á barbe, and Serocki Sonatina.

How long have you with the ESO?
Since 1983.

How many instruments do you know how to play?
The trombone and piano.

What is your musical guilty pleasure?
The Dixie Chicks.

What is the last album you purchased (digital or physical)?
Le Chimera and Philippe Sly, Schubert: Winterreise.

What was the last music you listened to?
Andrea Gabrieli.

What is your pre-concert ritual?
A light meal, a careful warm-up, and a last-minute quick change.

What's something people might not know about you?
I had lots of punked-out hair colours in the 1980s.

What is your favourite sports team or player?
The Detroit Tigers.

How many different cities have you lived in?
Nine.

What is your favourite city (or a country) you’ve travelled and why?
Munich, for the culture.

What food would be on your rider as a rock star?
Licorice.
