Experience DakhaBrakha at the Winspear This Month

By Micha Oostenbrink

The sensational international group, DakhaBrakha, is coming to the Winspear for a special one-night-only performance on Sunday, March 31.

The music of DakhaBrakha (meaning “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language) is bright, unique, and unforgettable. Although their main inspirations are rooted in Ukrainian culture, they often use traditional instrumentation from countries around the world to produce a trans-national sound. Their impressive and powerful vocals, along with the fusion of Ukrainian folk music with rhythms of the surrounding world, allow them to create an experience like no other on stage.

Hailing from Kyiv, Ukraine, the world-music quartet has roots in the theatre world. DakhaBrakha was founded in 2004 by Vladyslav Troitskyi, a prominent Ukrainian theatre director who had a vision of creating a scenic show that pairs with the atmospheric music being performed by the group. Members Marko Galanevych, Olena Tsybulska, Iryna Kovalenko, and Nina Garenetska work together to exhibit the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theatre with selections ranging from intimate and sublime, to powerful and full of spirit.

DakhaBrakha has won multiple awards, including the Shevchenko National Prize (musical arts category) in 2020, and the Sergey Kuryokhin Prize in 2010. The group has also performed in nearly every continent across the globe, from Europe and Asia to North and South America, and even as far as Australia. They have released a number of studio albums over the last two decades, with their most recent, “Alambari,” recorded in Brazil in 2019.
