The Magic of Harry Potter Lies in the Music

There’s a reason that opening the doors to the world of Hogwarts feels like coming home. For some people, it’s the words on the page coming alive in their imagination, sharing their bright colours and animated joy. For others, it’s seeing the darkness on the screen become light, watching the story unfold before their eyes in all its equally heartwarming and heartbreaking glory. Regardless of your preference for book versus film, there is one thing that we can all agree makes us feel like we’ve returned to the wonderful, magical school of Witchcraft and Wizardry: music.
From the quiet tap of the celesta as the first few notes of Hedwig’s Theme soar into the air to the crashing cymbals as Harry’s inevitable, annual defeat of Lord Voldemort takes place, music is what truly immerses us in the magical land of Harry Potter. John Williams set the pace for the powerful yet soft, kind yet terrifying music that perfectly suits the popular tale. Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, and Alexandre Desplat took up the challenge for future films, though many of the basic themes that Williams set in place make a return in future movies in the series.
All eight of the Harry Potter movies feature familiar tunes. Rich strings, upbeat woodwinds, and a powerful brass section bring a sense of adventure to Harry’s Wondrous World – a piece that will surely pull at your heartstrings, and of course, we can’t forget about the most memorable tune of all, Hedwig’s Theme. As the iconic theme moves across the orchestra, from the flutes to the French horns, energy builds up and the excitement in the music becomes contagious.
